_ There are
literally dozens an dozens of verses that teach what I am about to show you. Here’s
David again v.1 “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing
praises unto thy name, O most High:…” Now, as you are
about to see, one of the greatest blessings to the heart of God is to when He
hears the praises of His people. As I went through the Psalms this week on the
topic of praise, I discovered that over forty per cent of the Psalms include this
word “praise.” But look with me at
each of these verses and see if they don’t clearly teach us that, when God’s
people praise the LORD, they sing their
praises to Him.
II Chronicles 20:22 “And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.”
II Chronicles 23:13 “…and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of music, and such as taught to sing praise.”
Psalm 7:17 “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.
Psalm 9:2 “I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.”
Psalm 21:13 “Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.”
Psalm 57:7 “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
Psalm 69:30 “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. (31) This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.”
Psalm 98:4 “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. (5) Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. (6) With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.
Psalm 100: 1 “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD…” (2) Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. (4) Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”
Psalm 104:33 “I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.”
Acts 16:25 “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”
Romans 15:9 “And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.”
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
Hebrews 2:12 “Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
Praise is something that is sung to the LORD. Yes, we can praise the LORD by our mere words and of course, by our attitudes and spirit. But the sheer volume of Scriptures on this subject demonstrates how important singing is to the matter of praise. Folks, there’s no indication in the Bible that it’s OK not to sing, is there? You see, it doesn’t indicate that only those who had a singing voice were called upon to sing. All of God’s people sang His praises. And why? Why sing your praise to the LORD? Here are at least three reasons why we are called to sing our praise to the LORD.
First, because God lives inside our praise. Here’s what we read in Psalm 22:3 “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” David knows the LORD as the Holy God. But more than that, he knows what happens when His people praise Him. The LORD is present whenever we lift up His name upon our lips in song to worship and appreciate Him. When we sing His praises we see Him for Who He Is. Go on to Page Four
