"DAVID, A TRUE MAN"
Have you ever met a perfect person? Have you ever read about a perfect man in any biography or history book? Now it’s true that the LORD Jesus Christ is The Perfect Man. But, what about this?
II Kings 20:3 “I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.”
And how about this? I Chronicles 12:38 “All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.”
And how about this? I Chronicles 29:9 “Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.”
And how about this? I Chronicles 29:19 “And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.”
It’s so often true that what we think about a thing has to be adjusted when we simply let the Bible speak the truth into our hearts.
Yes, it’s true that Jesus Christ is The Perfect Man. But let the Bible be your strength. Isn’t there a use of the term “perfect” that applies to the ordinary Believer? Doesn’t it even apply to you and me?
Would you open your Bible with me today to the Book of Matthew at chapter five?
What do you think of a man who refused to make an enemy of those people who used and hurt and abused him? And, even more than that, instead, in the face of some very challenging odds this man always spoke well of those people?
His name is David. I’d like you to consider with me “David, A True Man and a True King”. Shall we pray?
The more I worked on the sermon for today, the more I realized that a lot of sermons, books, Bible lessons, etc., only scratch the surface of the lives of some of God’s greatest servants. There are hundreds of books on the life of King David. I’ve got a few of them in my library.
But, again, what you see on the surface of a man’s life is certainly not all he is. And even when you read a person’s biography (and I’ve got dozens of biographies in my library), there is often so much more than the facts and the dates and the accomplishments and the inspirational stories of the person’s life. I’m beginning to realize that you can never judge a book by its cover.
Let me show you what I mean. Here’s King David. Can you find any Scripture that reveals David saying anything but good about people like King Saul who totally despised him? I’ve searched. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything except this.
He never spoke against King Saul even in the face of Saul’s envy, his hatred, his personal attacks, and even his physical attacks. Did you know that Saul twice attacked David personally with a javelin? One day he sent some of his men to slay David in his bed before he woke up one morning. And even when Saul took his chosen soldiers out after David, you can’t find David speaking against the man who made David his enemy.
And then when Saul dies, David mourns and grieves as if Saul were his own brother. He makes sure he receives a proper burial. And then he even writes a Poem of Remembrance about him.
What kind of person is this? What I’d like you to today is this. I want you to consider describing him by this term: “A True Man.”

Consider, for just a moment, how you might define or describe a true man or a true woman.
