Yet, the LORD wants you to quote “commit” your way to Him. “Commit” = “roll.” What it means is that God calls each of us to “roll” our plans onto Him because He’s got a better way than we’ll ever have. One commentator puts it this way. “Roll thy way upon -- as one who lays upon the shoulder of one stronger than himself a burden which he is not able to bear. William De Burgh, D.D., in "A Commentary on the Book of Psalms. Dublin:" 1860.” [Found on www.biblestudytools.com]. When you roll something off of yourself, you “refer” that thing to the LORD, as Matthew Henry would say.
The LORD wants to direct you. And, although He is a Sovereign Father, He still wants you to want to be directed by Him. So David writes “Commit thy way unto the LORD…” The Prophet Jeremiah spoke these words to the Jews one day. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” You see, the LORD has desires for you. He wants to work His will out for your life. So, when you make your plans, consider the fact that the LORD more than anyone else desires to guide your life. So, refer it all to Him.
First, the LORD desires to guide your life.
Second, continually pray for and seek the LORD’s will and His ways in everything you do. You can only commit something to God as you pray to Him. You see, He wants to be your Father in every area of your life, which He is. He wants you to enjoy His personal oversight of your labors and your accomplishments. He also wants, as Pastor John Gill says, for you to depend upon Him for success. And, of course, His desire is that your life give Him glory. So, God’s desire is that you look to Him for His working out of the things in your life. He loves to hear you pray the prayer of submission. “Father, I submit all that I am to you today. Work your blessed will out upon me.”
In Psalm 55:22 we read this. Psalm 55:22 “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: …”
I know many of you have quite a few burdens. But this phrase “cast your burden” refers to the burden of the moment; whatever is weighing upon your heart and mind right now. God wants to carry that load for you. He wants you to enjoy leaning upon Him with those stresses and pressures that so often weigh you down. It’s a whole lot easier for two people to lift a load than one.
In the NT, the Apostle Peter puts it like this. I Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
First, the LORD desires to guide your life.
Second, continually pray for and seek the LORD’s will to be worked out upon you.
Third, trust Him to work out what is most pleasing to Him. David writes Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
King David was free from his enemies and now had time to think about his life and what more He could do with his life to honor the LORD. And he concluded that he was in a position to be able to build a temple to the LORD. And yet, he was willing to let God have His time to work it out. Trust comes from learning that someone else is trustworthy. And David had learned throughout his entire life, just like you and me, that God is the trustworthy one. We are the ones who need to daily increase our trust in Him.
Proverbs 3:5 says this. Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Some people trust in the military.
Some people trust in their wealth.
Some people trust in themselves.
Some people trust in their own plans.
Here’s Psalm 20:7 “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”
Here’s Proverbs 11:28 “He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.”
And here’s Proverbs 28:26 “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.”
