The first and possibly the best thing we can ever learn in our personal uphill battles in life is this. The throne of grace is the throne of comfort and strength. Our greatest need is Divine Comfort. If we don’t have that, we’re like a ship that flounders in the storm.
Every sailor knows that there must be days when the storms come upon them. And it all depends upon how we face and handle that storm as to whether the ship will go down or we’ll get through the rough weather.
Now even if Joab had had a heart to help David, which he did not; we know that his greatest help was closer than his very breath from his mouth. My help comes from the LORD Himself. Here are just a few words from David on this very subject of where he found his greatest help. Here’s Psalm 27:9 Psalm 27:9 “…thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.”
Psalm 40:17 “But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.”
Psalm 63:7 “Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.”
Psalm 70:5 “But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.”
Psalm 71:12 “O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.”
Psalm 94:17 “Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
Psalm 121:1 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. (2) My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
The first and best thing you will ever learn to do in this life is to go to the place where true, lasting help is found. It’s found in the arms of your Father. It’s found in the heart of God. It’s found at the throne of grace. A couple minutes ago, I turned your attention to just one of David’s songs; Psalm 109. It’s a song describing both David’s uphill battle with life; but also his place of strength.
Psalm 109 shows us that King David could do the one thing that we need to do when we face our biggest storms. Look with me at the way David handles things and see if there isn’t something that you and I can do when we are in this kind of need.
First, he turns to the LORD for help. He goes to the place where he can find grace to help in time of need. What you and I often do when we are over-whelmed by life is to turn inward instead of turning upward. But that’s only because we haven’t learned to trust the Father’s heart very well. You know, He can be trusted with your problems. Now it may take a number of times for problems to come into your heart and life before you begin to see Who really can help. But folks, God is patient.
Here’s Psalm 109 verse twenty-one again. Psalm 109:21 “But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.” Go on to page four
