_ He is sent to the front lines of battle and dies. And further, David waits until Bathsheba is done mourning for his soldier husband and then takes her for his wife. Now, these and many others are what I’m describing to you as “unintended consequences.”
But let’s read carefully what the Bible teaches here. II Samuel 11:26. II Samuel 11:26 “And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. (27) And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.” Here’s true history. God sees exactly what we do and He knows exactly why we do it. And it’s either pleasing to Him or it displeases Him.
The simple fact is is this. We are sinners through and through. We are what theologians call totally depraved. Yes, we appear nice and we all do good and moral things. We give our money to help others. We stand up against injustice. We try our best to be good citizens and obey the laws of the land.
But here’s what total depravity looks like.
1. Our understanding has been darkened by sin. Ephesians 4:18 “…Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (19) Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness”
2. Our ability to do good is gone. Romans 7:18 “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. (19) For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. (20) Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.”
3. Our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked. Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
4. Our minds and our consciences are impure. Titus 1:15Titus 1:15 “… but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
You see, according to the truths in your Bible, we are corrupt. We’ve been corrupted by our own sin natures. And none of us is exempt. II Chronicles 6:36 “… for there is no man which sinneth not …” Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it”
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;…”
Just take a brief look at the world around you and you can tell how far sin had affected us. What do you listen to and watch on the news or read in the newspaper. Is it good news or is there trouble in people’s hearts? Is crime on the up-swing or are crime rates on the rise? Can you name one world problem that has not been tainted by sin? And what world problem has been solved?
Consider the sins at school. Name just a few of the problems at school and see if sin isn’t widespread there. And how about your family? How about marriages in our world? Or has yours been exempt from the effects of sin in our world?
How about Hollywood? How about the stories we all watch on the television? How about the lives of the actors? How about musicians? How about the sports figures in today’s society? How about the financial system? How about the neighborhood? How about the medical system? How about the politicians and the government? How about the Church? How about the religions of the world? Name one institution that is sin-free. There aren’t any.
You see, every single part of humanity has been infected by the spiritual disease known as sin. And all of this originated when one man sinned one sin.
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (18) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”
II Timothy 3:13 “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” Go on to Page Four
