Page Three: “Nailed To The Cross” 4/7/13
What was it that the LORD Jesus was nailed to the cross that day? Some have incorrectly said or written that it was the OT Law that was nailed to the cross. Let me assure you that God has never set aside His law. Look at this.
I Timothy 1:8 “But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;…” Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (18) For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (19) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” I John 2:3 “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. (4) He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (5) But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (6) He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” Folks, God gave His law for our good. We would never know or see our sin apart from His law. So, what did God nail to the cross that day? What God nailed to the cross was the charges against you and me. And what were those charges? The charges are the record of all your offenses against Him. Whatever sins were on your sin account; that’s what was nailed to the cross on your behalf. Here’s how some have stated it. Colossians 2:14 “having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.” [NIV]. |
Colossians 2:14 “Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away the handwriting of the note (bond) with its legal decrees and demands which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us). This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing it to [His] cross.” [AMP]
Colossians 2:14 “…having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” [ESV] You see, it could not be God’s law that was set aside. Instead, it was the charges that were against us because of our sin.
Complete forgiveness means nothing left to pay. Let me illustrate it with the use of a credit card. Imagine, for just a moment, that you have foolishly and wastefully used your credit card to the tune of $19,000.00. Now, notwith-standing your obligation to pay it back; imagine that someone with no reason but a concern for you, pays off that entire balance for you. Now, has the credit card account been destroyed? No. Has the bank on which the credit card was issued been ruined? No. Instead, it’s all on you. And now that it’s been paid off, you are completely free from that debt. Credit card is fine. Bank is fine. And, best of all, you are fine. You see, the law was not nailed to the Cross that day. The LORD took all the charges that were against you because of your sin and, by pure grace, paid those charges in full. |
