Page Five: “The Head of the Church” 4/21/13
When you are making decisions, He, as your Head is ready and willing to fill your heart with His peace. This, as you can easily see, is His will for you and me. He wants you to enjoy a peace that passes your understanding. He wants for you to live in peace. He wants for you to walk in peace. So, as you surrender your time and your work and your finances and your decisions to Him, He, as your Head, grants you a calmness, a steadiness, and a serenity that passes all understanding.
First, Paul saw his place in the Church only because he saw himself under the headship of Jesus Christ. Second, Jesus is the Head of all things. Third, Jesus is the Head of His Church. Fourth, since Christ is your head, the control factor of your life is His peace. Fifth and finally, with Christ as your Head, you can do everything in your life in His Name. Here’s Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Imagine the joy the LORD receives when He observes you viewing everything in your life from the standpoint that He is your Head. Imagine the joy He receives when nothing in your life is being done apart from Him. Imagine the entire honor being sent up to Him as you surrender all your words and deeds to Him as you live today. That’s what living according to your Head means. Now, imagine going to Him everyday with everything in your heart and life; going to Him, leaving nothing out. Imagine surrendering all your thoughts and your words and your activities to Him as you proceed through your day. What a way to live. Your living Head in charge fully of everything. There’s a beautiful Christian hymn titled “And Can It Be?” It was written by Charles Wesley in 1738. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine! Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness Divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. [http://www.hymnal.net/hymn.php/h/296#ixzz2QeZ0LqkJ] |
Can you see what Wesley is saying here? He’s saying that you are alive in Him which means this “He’s your living Head.” Now, as the one under His headship you have the joy and privilege of doing everything, all you do in word or deed in His name. What a life!
And Paul adds this in the third chapter of this epistle. Colossians 3:23 “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; (24) Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” First, Paul saw his place in the Church only because he saw himself under the headship of Jesus Christ. Second, Jesus is the Head of all things. Third, Jesus is the Head of His Church. Fourth, since Christ is your head, the control factor of your life is His peace. Fifth and finally, with Christ as your Head, you can do everything in your life in His Name. As the Head, He is the Source of your entire life. Your response? What can and should you do today and each day this week because of what you’ve discovered in the Word of God? Surrender. The best response to the LORD is the response of surrender. Will you surrender your will, your time, your life to Him today? Here’s the Prayer of Surrender that you can pray at each and every juncture in your life. “LORD, right now I submit all that I am to you, my spirit, my soul, and my body. Do with me what is most pleasing to you. Work out Your blessed will upon me today. Amen” Will you pray this prayer to your Living Head? Shall we pray? |
