Page Three: “Blessed Are The Pure In Heart” - 07/29/2012
In the days of the OT sacrificial law, there was only one way for the altar to be cleansed. The priest was required to sprinkle the blood of the offering upon it. And so, when we see with understanding the work of the Cross, we are sprinkled with that eternally powerful blood, the blood of Jesus Christ.
And here’s another word from the Apostle Paul in Hebrews nine. Hebrews 9:13 “for if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh, (14) How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” You see, it’s always a matter of the heart with God. First, pure means clean and cleansed. Second, pure is a matter of the heart. Third, then, the clean heart is experienced by faith. Here’s Acts 15:8 “And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did unto us: (9) “And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” Both OT Saints and NT Saints experience a pure heart by simple faith. We believe what God says. And that simple, childe-like faith is enough so that God through His Spirit removes our natural impurities; all the impurities that sin had caused to stain your heart. All removed by faith. You see, folks, the natural man cannot know these wonderful realities. They are only yours by faith in the words of God. First, pure means clean and cleansed. Second, pure is a matter of the heart. Third, the clean heart is experienced by faith. Fourth, pure is a moral word. And, as you know, morality involves your mind, your motives, and your principles. Pure is pure from God’s standpoint. |
Here’s how one commentator defines this word “pure.” Pure = “the ideal state of mind and heart of a person who longs to know and to serve God and others … free of base motives.”
Morality is only moral because it’s pure. And any sense of morality must recognize the purity of God Himself. Think about it like this. God is pure morality. And that’s because there can be no impurity with God. Would you drink a glass of dirty water? Would you drink a glass of pure water out of a dirty glass? No. And why? Because both the container and the water affect each other. In the very same way, God expresses His purity in His morality,. There can be no morality apart from Him. So, the pure heart can only be the heart that has been truly affected by God’s morality. First, pure means clean and cleansed. Second, pure is a matter of the heart. Third, the clean heart is experienced by faith. Fourth, pure is a moral word. And the LORD’s promise is absolutely wonderful. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Now consider the way the pure heart sees God. “A Defiled Heart Cannot See God: but He Must Be Pure Who Wishes to Enjoy a Proper View of a Pure Being." [Found on www.bible.cc – from Mr. Wakefield from Origen, Contra Cels. lib. vi.]. “To see” is another way of saying “to know” God. Of all the blessedness we get to experience as finite created beings, this is one of the greatest. God allows us the joy of knowing Him. |
