If all the treasures (plural) of wisdom and knowledge are found in Jesus, would you expect Jesus to just pass out His wisdom to you if you intended to use it to satisfy all your fleshly lusts? Or would you expect Jesus to patiently wait for you to come to Him, to commit yourself to Him, to let Him teach you His wisdom line by line and precept by precept and situation by situation?
Folks, I believe wisdom is illusive to a lot of people. And here’s the reason. They have no intention of applying it. They want head knowledge and no personal obedience to Christ. So, you can be sure that the LORD will not dispense His wisdom upon the heads and hearts of those who will not let Him be their Teacher. Someone once said “when the student is ready, the Teacher will appear.” That simply means when you are willing to let the LORD become your teacher in the matters of wisdom and knowledge, you can be sure He will instantly avail Himself to you. Today, I’d like you to see Jesus as He is – a Person with a lot of wisdom and knowledge. In Him is the treasure of all wisdom and knowledge. And He’s that kind of Person for you and me. We all like people who know what they are talking about. If you had a doctor who talked in circles or spoke way over your head, chances are, you’d either walk away and say “What did he say?” or you’d change doctors. But let Jesus be your Doctor for today. Ask Him any question you want to ask. Remind yourself that He’s got all the time in the world for you. And then, see Him as He truly is – the God/Man who doesn’t need anyone to explain you to Him. He knows all there is to know about you. And He knows you at your deepest level. First, Paul doesn’t say “All the Treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.” But he does include that in what he says. Second, Paul’s emphasis is on that fact that Jesus is the Omniscient God. Third, both wisdom and knowledge are regarded in Scripture as treasures. |
(3) “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Now, there’s one more thing here. (4) Why did Paul say this? Jesus, I’m sure, because He is the omniscient One, could predict the future. He knows what you will pass through tomorrow. He knows just what you’ll be like five years from now. Yes, He knows all there is to know. But folks, He’s not going to announce the future of your life to you in advance. What then might be the reason for Paul saying (3) “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”? Here’s the reason. Answer: Because God fully knows your heart and He also wants you to come to Him and diligently seek and receive that wisdom. Let me close today with a story from the Gospel of John. It’s a story about the Apostle Peter. John 21:14 “This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. (15) So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. (16) He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. (17) He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.” Here’s Peter; do you really think he’s wondering “I think I’d like Jesus to tell me my future today”? No, he knows Jesus is omniscient. And that omniscience brings grief to Peter’s heart. He realized, finally, that Jesus knows him inside and out. And he’s a bit nervous now. “Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee…” |
